AUGUSTA — The heavy, oily smell of freshly applied asphalt pavement and the rumble of heavy trucks will permeate the northwest area of the city Sunday and run through the week.

The marathon paving project is part of the effort to complete the road reconstruction around Interstate 95’s exit 113 and create a new section of Route 3 linking to Civic Center Drive.

The project has been underway since early spring, and has resulted in two new roundabouts, widening and regrading roads, extensive drainage work and changes in the intersection configuration.

Two new traffic signals — one at the entrance to MaineGeneral Medical Center’s new regional hospital on Old Belgrade Road and the other at Routes 27 and 3 — have yet to be installed.

The $11.5 million project is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 8. The 192-bed hospital opens for patients Nov. 6.

For months, flaggers have been directing motorists at Old Belgrade Road intersections and other connecting roads. While some of it is related to natural gas pipeline installation, most of it involves the exit 113 improvement project.

Traffic is frequently reduced to one lane and slowed so work can continue all day.

The project is ahead of schedule, said Ted Talbot, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, but he warned that the paving project is particularly weather-dependent.

• Exit 113 northbound off-ramp closed 9 p.m. Sunday – 5 a.m. Monday.

• Exit 113 southbound on-ramp Monday 9 p.m.  – Tuesday 5 a.m.;
